VINEYARD

The prestigious Quartz Stone Chardonnay is made from a single vineyard which is the oldest block of Chardonnay on the property which was planted in 1989. The soil found in this block is decomposed granite with significant amounts of quartz in it, hence its name.

Our farm is situated in the Simonsberg Mountain foothills in the Paarl region of the Western Cape and encompasses a variety of slopes and aspects. Of the current 31 blocks planted, each is nurtured according to its own unique potential, respecting the natural cycles of the vines. A vineyard programme of adding five hectares per year to realise a total of 60 hectares is underway with hardier rootstocks and new varietal clonal selections being planted.

WINEMAKING

90% of the yield was naturally fermented in 225l new French oak and 10% in Nomblot eggs. It was aged in the barrels for 11 months.

TASTING NOTES

“Quartz Stone is the name of the magnificent single vineyard block and one of the oldest Chardonnay sites on the farm. Named for the soil in which the vines grow, this wine showcases marmalade preserve, citrus and ripe stone fruit aromas. The palate is complex, full bodied and layered in butterscotch, glace oranges and lime zest.” Johnnie Calitz

WINEMAKING

Fermented in stainless steel tanks for two weeks followed by skin contact maceration of 10 days. It was then aged in new 225 l French oak barrels for 18 months.

TASTING NOTES

“Dark chocolate with blue and blackberry nuances on the nose follow through to a firmly structured palate. The fruit flavors are supported by the oak with hints of tobacco leaf and cedar. This wine named for the deep gravel soils which the vines are grown in, will age wonderfully if cellared correctly.” Johnnie Calitz.
